Have you ever wondered what a dry brush is for? Ever wondered why you should use one? I received my first dry brush a year or two ago in one of my FabFitFun boxes. I have never owned one before and thought to myself, what am I supposed to do with this?
To be honest, not only have I never used a dry brush in my life and I do not know a single person who ever used one either…that I know of anyway. So at first, I have this stiff bristled brush and I rubbed it up and down my leg. Well guess what? That was wrong and let me tell you, it did not feel good on my skin.
So being the person that I am, being the humans that we are, I turned to Google. One to figure out how to use this thing properly. Secondly, to figure out why I should even use this thing.
So How Does Dry Brushing Work?
It’s Exfoliating – The course bristles of the brush, remove dead skin cells from the top layer of your skin, leaving your skin much smoother. This in and of itself, made me want to dry brush. I don’t know why my skin is so dry (sorry to get all Dr. Seuss there!), but my skin is incredibly dry. Especially in winter. Like no amount of lotion seems to help me. Also, dry brushing helped to get rid of the little ingrown hairs I would get on my calves, so that was another win for me!
Improves Circulation – Circulation is vital to the health of your entire body. I know, circulation probably not something you’re thinking about daily. I don’t either. Just like a massage, dry brushing can bring you relaxation and relief from stresses in your life. It helps to stimulate your body’s blood flow. Yes, there is a correct method – start at your feet and rub in circles up to your heart. Don’t apply too hard of pressure.
Offers a Moment of Self-care – If dry brushing does nothing else for you, this one is most important. It gives you a moment to take care of your body. The number one thing most of us don’t take care of. I know I struggle daily for getting moments of where I can give myself a little self-care.
Other Benefits – There are claims that dry brushing can help with stimulate your lymphatic system, help the body rid itself of toxins and help to reduce cellulite. Well I’m not a doctor so I won’t tell you these benefits are true because I don’t know. But I’m just throwing those benefits that out there.
