Tips for Creating a Modern Boho Bedroom
The Bed
Let’s talk about the most important element of the room: the bed. It is the main focal point. Look for beds that are made of natural materials – wood. Look for light-colored, solid wood frames. Headboards with organic shapes help tie in that boho look.
Bedding
While we are talking about beds, let’s talk about bedding. You want your bed to look as cozy as possible. Choose bedding that makes me you just want to crawl into your bed and curl up with a good book or binge watch your favorite show on Netflix.
Bedding is one opportunity you can bring in more color. If you opted for white walls, you can totally get beautiful colored bedding such as rust or teal. If you chose to put some color on your walls, choose neutral bedding such as white or cream.
Add Layers
Once you got your bedding picked out, it’s time to add layers. This just brings coziness to a whole new level. For a boho touch, add a chunky knit blanket or a tassled throw pillow. You could also mix it up and add faux fur.
Furniture
Rule number one and the only rule with boho is: you DON’T need matching pieces! Mixing and matching furniture is a great way to create that boho look. Look for light-colored, solid wood pieces. Organic and natural looking. You can also add in some vintage pieces. Avoid pieces that are super glossy.
Rugs
Rugs are a must when it comes to boho style. It adds coziness to the room. Think of a rug as a piece of artwork for your floor. You can even layer rugs for an even bigger boho vibe!
Start with a rug under your bed. If you have a large bedroom, you can add extra rugs elsewhere, but a rug under your bed helps bring a focal point to the room.
Here is a basic interior design rules for rug sizing:
If you have a queen-sized bed, you’ll need a rug in any one of these sizes:
- 5′ x 8′ – are great for small rooms
- 6′ x 9′ – you’ll have two-thirds of your bed on the rug
- 8′ x 10′ – you will have all 4 of the bed’s legs on the rug as well as the nightstands
- 9′ x 12′ – use if you have a large bedroom; this size will help to fill up more floor space
If you have a king-sized bed, you’ll need a rug in any one of these sizes:
- 6′ x 9′
- 8′ x 10′
- 9′ x 12′
As a general rule of thumb: a rug under the bed should extend 12 to 18 inches from the sides and foot of the bed.
Lighting
Lighting is just as important in a room. What does your current light fixture look like? Is it a ceiling fan or one of those builder grade boob looking light fixtures? If so, swap it out with woven or beaded fixture.
Wall Art
Don’t keep your walls bare. I know people love to flood their homes with family pictures, but your bedroom is a sacred place. Opt out of family pictures and choose artwork or wall hangings instead. This is your chance to bring in your accent colors. Macrame is a great choice and you can even decorate with hats, woven baskets or a jewelry organizer. And don’t forget a mirror to help bounce light around the room!
Curtains
You can use curtains for 2 purposes:
- to dress up a room – add accent colors and/or patterns
- for privacy
If you already have a lot of color going on in the room, opt for a soft, neutral curtain. A sheer white curtain is great for letting lots of natural light in! If you chose white walls, than you can choose a colored or pattern curtain to bring more visual interest to the room.
Plants
No boho space would be complete without a plant. You could place a small one of your window sill, nightstand or have one in a hanging basket. Choose a vine plant for more visual interest. A large plant in a corner is always nice too! Snake plants or a palm are great for putting in a pot in the corner.
