With cooler temps just around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about transitioning your home’s summer decor to fall decor. Here are five easy ways to start incorporating touches of autumn in your home.
Display Autumn Fruits
One of the easiest and most budget-friendly ways to bring fall decor into your home is to display seasonal fruits. Apple, pears, oranges, pumpkins, and gourds are colorful ways to decorate your tables and mantels throughout your home. If you have a large wide glass jar, such as this one, simply fill it with apples and/or pears.
You can also use wide-mouth vases likes these in different heights to create vignettes that would look perfect on your mantle or entryway table. Bowls, crates, and baskets also make wonderful styling holders for fruit. Look around your home and see what you have available.
Pillows
Another way to accessorize your home for the fall is to bring in autumn tones and textures. A great way to do this is with decorative pillows. Inexpensive pillow covers in velvet and earthy colors like these are an easy way to make the transition to fall. Choose colors that work with your existing palette but still have an autumn feel to them. Or try covers with fall scenes and phrases, like these. Burlap is another texture that’s perfect for fall. Here’s a DIY no-sew pillow tutorial that’s a wonderful way to create a one-of-a-kind look for your home.
Candles
Bundles candles together on a decorative tray. Go neutral with white or off-white candles or choose orange, browns, and greens for a more colorful display. Take any candle and wrap it in birch bark for a truly fall feel. I love this DIY tutorial from Little House Of Four on how to make inexpensive faux birch candles using LED candles. Place your candles on your mantel, tables, bookcases, entryways, bedroom dressers or use as centerpieces on your kitchen and dining room tables.
Switch Out Dining And Kitchen Linens
Your tablecloth, table runner, placements, napkins, napkin rings and centerpieces are all fair game for an autumnal change. If you have neutral plates, you can easily add fall color chargers or placemats. This set of chargers is a rustic choice that gives you many decorating options. These DIY jeweled raffia napkin rings by Modpodge Rocks are inexpensive and fun to make! Keep it simple with solid linens and accent with a colorful centerpiece, or go all out with patterned and themed linens in fall designs.
Fall Scents
One of the easiest ways to evoke a sense of fall in the air is to make your home smell like autumn. Scents of the season include apples, pumpkin, cinnamon, and pine just to name a few. An easy way to have fall in the air is to simmer a pot of sliced apples and oranges along with a few sticks of cinnamon and vanilla beans (or vanilla extract) on your stove. Just add water to cover the mixture and bring to a boil; reduce the heat to a low simmer. Check frequently and add water when it starts to get low. You can also do this in your slow cooker; just leave the lid off. For a more hands-off experience, try DIY scented pine cones. Here’s an easy tutorial on how to make these. Another method of enjoying scents of the season is with essential oils and a diffuser.
These ideas will get you started on your summer to fall decor transition, as well as get you prepared for the upcoming holidays. Enjoy the remainder of summer while looking forward to the coziness of fall, cooler weather and the changing color palette of nature’s beauty.
